IMG_0784Cheryl Hellman received her undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University with a major in Finance and a minor in Business Law. She attended Loyola University of Chicago Law School, focusing on the development of her litigation skills. Ms. Hellman graduated from Loyola in 1992 and returned to her native Grand Rapids, where she is licensed to practice in the State of Michigan, as well as the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.

Ms. Hellman began her career developing an extensive familiarity with Michigan No-Fault Law including PIP Benefits, Third-Party Liability, and Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist coverage issues. She has given numerous seminars over the years involving hot topics in the area of litigation and No-Fault. In addition to continuing her work in these areas, Ms. Hellman has also litigated a number of cases involving insurance fraud, arson and subrogation. Along with her several years of litigation in private practice, Ms. Hellman also served on the litigation team at an insurance company servicing a five state region. Her time in-house allowed her to develop her knowledge of the operation of insurance companies, the various types of policies, and the role of litigation in the world of insurance.

Ms. Hellman received her Certificate in Probate and Estate Planning from the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education creating the opportunity to further develop her estate planning skills. Such skills, although beneficial on their own, have also proved useful in insurance cases involving issues of real property held in trust and jointly held property.

Recently, Ms. Hellman successfully argued a case in the Michigan Court of Appeals upholding the residency provision of a homeowner’s policy. Her varied experience combines to make her an effective litigator and problem solver for our clients. Her years of experience in insurance litigation and consulting, combined with her experience in estate planning, business consulting and contract disputes make her an invaluable part of the Willison + Hellman team.

In her spare time, Ms. Hellman enjoys going to movies, cooking and hiking with her family in the woods near their home.
